Hello,
My name is Véronique, I’m 36 years old, I have two children, a partner, two university degrees and an incurable cancer. You would never imagine how life-disrupting being ill can be.
Illness is everywhere, and it’s now a part of my life, whether I like it or not. And it doesn’t only affect me… It also affects my family, my friends, my colleagues.
Last year, I felt the need to confide in someone, so I went for psychological counselling, but after a few sessions, I concluded that therapy was not the answer. I needed to talk to other people who were facing the same struggles.
I was well surrounded by my loved ones, but they couldn’t understand all the subtleties of the disease, and I certainly didn’t want to overwhelm them with all my questions and fears.
That’s when the Centre de mieux-être en cancérologie came about. For me, it’s first and foremost a place where we can be ourselves, feel comfortable whether we still have our hair or not, whether we’re feeling tired or lively, sad or hopeful.
It’s a place where we can meet other extraordinary human beings, including healthcare professionals, volunteers, and other patients who are sick or in remission. This warm and welcoming place offers a range of complementary services that the hospital and its care team, despite their expertise and good will, are unable to provide.
In addition to workshops and conferences, the Centre de Mieux-être offers therapeutic yoga classes, massage therapy adapted to the needs of each patient, art therapy, kinesiology, hair prosthesis loans and oncological aesthetic treatments.
The Centre de mieux-être en cancérologie fills a growing need in our area, enabling people like me to feel supported and understood as we navigate the tsunami of illness, because battling illness alone is inhuman.
